Bluebell was already a gleam in our eyes in february 1982, as we decided to buy her father to match with her mother. In 1984 the miracle happened: Titiana gave birth to one of the most beautiful foals born at Sumrin. As this little pony was linebred 7 times to to renowned Bowdler Blue Boy (born 1933), and as she danced in the field like a bluebell dancer, we decided to name her Bluebell. Bluebell is actually the first exception on the rule that descendants of Tina start with the letter 'T'.

As we saw future in Bluebell and we had three broodmares, Tina, Titiana and Tirana, we decided to sell Titiana, as we found an interested buyer in Mr. Swinkels of the Silvertop's stud. We decided that Bluebell went along with her, but we would get her back when she had to be weaned. Unfortunately, Titiana's new owner didn't care so well for the ponies and we were actually quite shocked when we got her back. Titiana was more or less skin and bones, where she had always been a mare that would get fat easily.

I trained Bluebell all winter in the forest, preparing her for the big shows in the next summer. I wanted to show this little dancer.

In Spring 1985, the first show came along. I took Bluebell to the local show at St.Oedenrode, where she was placed 4th in her class. She did qualify to go to the southern Dutch regional show, but I was disappointed that she was passed by some less refined ponies. Mr. Amory of the Home 'T' Ranch comforted me and said that at the age of seven, this mare will be the most beautiful off all. At the regional show, she failed to qualify for the national. The judges comment was that she is not as mature as the other ones in her group. In fall 85, my father decided to sell her to Mr. de Jong in Pingjum, Friesland. I was gone for the day, so I couldn't change what was happening.

In Spring 1986, Bluebell was shown in Friesland. I was quite excited to go, but couldn't get a ride to go and see her. 200 miles is a long distance in the Netherlands. My good friend Harold Zoet said that many people feared the competition of Bluebell, but the judges now even gave her a second premium, which is as much as: "This is a hopeless case" in the Dutch system. In the fall, I finally made it to Friesland and was all excited. Mr. van Dongen of the Abberthome stud was with me and we specifically went to see her, to see what made her get the second premium. She was in a very dark shed and looked quite horrible, too fat and not taken care of at all. I asked Mr. de Jong if I could take her and show her. Bluebell seemed to recognize me after all that time and she danced around like only she can do. She does have a very sound trot in her. Mr. van Dongen immediately offered money for her and she was going to move to Abberthome.

In Spring 1987, Bluebell went to the regional show in Ommen. She was looking very good at the time and came into a very strong class. She still looked a bit immature. Judges said that she beat all of them in movements, but they wanted more substance and size. She came in 4th and did not yet qualify.

Sumrin Bluebell winning supreme championship in 1991In Spring 1991, Mr van Dongen called me. He knew that I always have wanted to buy her back. I did not have any money or fields, but bought her anyway, without my father's knowledge. I trained her for 6 weeks, starting with 10 minutes per day, going up to 1 hour a day. She went again to St.Oedenrode.. She won her class, which was not a surprise to me. Then she won the Section A championship at the show. I was over the moon. After that we were going for the supreme. No chance I thought, the section B was best three year old at the national the year before. But: Bluebell did get the supreme championship of the day. I had never been that happy until then. Bluebell was finally a champion pony, at the age of seven, just as Mr. Amory said. When I pointed that out at him, he had already forgotten that he said that. At the national she won her class and many people said she was a good contestant for the national championship, but barren mares just don't go that far.

In fall, fate struck again: the man where I had leased my field, did not keep up to his promises and I had to give up the land. My father couldn't have her either, as his was stables were full. It was time to find a new owner for Bluebell. On a day, the late Mr. Jos Bastiaansen came by with a friend of his, Mr Ad van Gestel (not a relative). Mr. van Gestel came just to see Sumrin Taxandria, but fell completely in love with Bluebell on the same day. He decided to buy both on the day and came back later to buy Revel Prince Hal from us. We agreed that the foal Bluebell was carrying would be registered in our prefix. Mr. Ad van Gestel decided to drive her, which was an enormous surprise to him. From the first moment on, she behaved like she had always done this and in two weeks she entered a competition, where she ended 13 out of 20, which isn't bad for a starter. Bluebell got a filly foal by Varpullan Wieroch that year, which was named Sumrin Brenda, after Criban Bantam's mother.

As Bluebell is a very concerned mother, she was very protective of her filly and Mr. van Gestel found that it was harder to use her in harness while having a foal at foot. Mr. Bastiaansen saw this and decided to purchase Bluebell off Mr. van Gestel. Her foal Sumrin Brenda stayed with Mr. van Gestel. Mr. Bastiaansen decided to show her again at the Lierop show where I decided to enter Brenda, even if she was not in my possession. Bluebell ended up with the reserve championship, next to Mr. Bastiaansen's senior mare, Ovenzicht's Christel. Brenda won the foal chamionship on that occasion, so I was quite happy with the result.

Fate struck again: Mr. Bastiaansen was diagnosed with cancer later that year and deceased. It was a very sad event. He just got his pension and left his wife alone with the ponies. She couldn't deal with a dozen ponies, so she had to sell them away. In the meanwhile, Mr. Peter van de Linden had purchased Sumrin Tricia off us. I advised him to go and take a look at Bluebell, as she was an opportunity of a lifetime for a young breeder.

Peter decided to purchase her and to show her in the 1993 season. He asked me if I would like to present her to the jury as he couldn't do it due to pain in his back. I said that I would be very honoured. However, due to a knee injury, I failed to be able to show her at the Wanroy qualification show. As my father was already showing Revel Comfrey in the same class, we had some trouble in presenting both. My brother Niels has always been our best presenter, so he had to do Revel Comfrey. My dad did Bluebell. As they were walking, The judges immediately put Revel Comfrey up first, as she is in fact an adorable pony and Sumrin Bluebell second in a class of 20. I was standing next to the ring and just informed Remco Dobber that the judges could easily swap number one and two. As I turned around to tell this, he said: "Look!", and it had already happened. Could you see my father's face when a mare that he had sold beat a champion mare that he had bought. After the championship, where all class winners compete, Bluebell came out with the last four. Many people said she should have won, but: the judge is always right.

Bluebell was obviously qualified for the national and the game started again. In a class of 25 ponies, Springbourne Heyday was placed first and Bluebell came in second. I was thrilled with such a good result in such a heavy class. I also meant that Bluebell had a slight chance to come to the championships, to be called in for the reserve national, if Heyday would win.
Heyday did win, so Bluebell had to come in. It was clear that this was not easy. The mare that was champion in Wanroy was also in the ring. We decided to give it our best shot. The ring was 100 meter by 100 meter, so we had to run quite a bit. But that is just Bluebell's strong point. The competition had already given up on such a long day. It was, after all, already 6:00 PM. Anyway, she did it! The jury called her in, which made me a very happy man. Bluebell proved herself! Her owner, Peter van der Linden was of course impressed also. One can only wish to buy a first mare and see her get this far.
Bluebell did go on to produce a couple of nice foals, notably Our Dream Belle by Foxhunter Pantheon. At the age of 17, Bluebell was exported to Belgium, where she still produced some foals.

  • Sumrin Saint Mary

    Born May 24, 2013

Sumrin Saint Mary, was named after the town of Saint Mary Church in Wales.

Saint Mary is a highly intelligent pony, and handled since she was a baby. She has attended a number of shows, up to international level and has been placed well.

Mary has produced 6 foals for us by 4 different stallions. We plan to retain 2-3 of her offspring.

Her sire is the stallion Rhesfair Joe Chwedl, who has won championships in Wales and was 5th at the Royal Welsh show 2011 in a very strong three year old colt class. Joe is by champion stallion Dukeshill Magnum out of two times national champion Caerheulog Lady Jane.

Sumrin Saint Mary was first shown at the local show of Lierop fokpaardendag as a filly foal. She won her class and was declared filly foal champion of the show.

As a two-year old, she was entered at the spring show of the WPCV in Houten. Under Mr. Gwyndaf Edwards of Fronbach stud. Saint Mary won her class and ended up reserve youngstock champion of the day.

  • Sumrin Satu

Sumrin Satu (photoby Kim Renders, July 15, 2017).Born April 28, 2017.

Satu was born 2 weeks early, she holds a lot of firsts for us:

    - Satu is the first pony out of her line with 5 generations of Sumrin breeding, 6 generations having been present at Sumrin.

    - Satu is the first Sumrin filly by a Sumrin stallion out of a Sumrin mare. We were very happy to find Sumrin Tysilio again after having disappeared for a number of years.

    - Satu is the first pony with the Sumrin prefix to be born in Limburg.

-Satu is the first foal line bred back to Sumrin Taru, one of the most succesful mares we have bred in our history. The name Satu means "fairytale"in Finnish and is a synonym to Taru. As Sumrin Taru passed away in January 2017, we hope she will get the quality of her illustrious ancestor.

One funny coincidence: The longest placename in Europe is a town by the name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which translates into English as "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave". Hence, once more Tysilio and Saint Mary come together.

Sumrin Satu was sold to a very good home in Germany.

  • Sumrin Ser y Bore

In the early morning of May 2, 2024, Sumrin Saint Mary gave birth to a big filly by Uiterwaardens Special Gift.

Her name will be "Morning Star" in Welsh, which translates to "Ser y Bore".

Not a complete coincidence, I remember seeing her paternal ancestor Betws Ser y Bore as in 1993 when visiting Gartconnel Stud.

Her full brother, Sumrin Stevo is available for a new home.

  • Sumrin Shine a Light

On April 25, 2022 just after midnight, Sumrin Saint Mary gave birth to a grey filly foal by Horselands Cracker.

She is a full sister to Sumrin Star of Hope and therefore the second filly to combine Sumrin Taru and Waardhoeve's Tirion.

Shine a Light is truly a midnight special, so her name comes from that chorus of the CCR song. That and of course a tribute to her grandmother Sumrin Twilight

Shine unfortunetely passed away early on November 3.

  • Sumrin Spitfire

    Born: 29 May, 2023

    Sire: Airborne Montgomery

    Dam: Sumrin Star of Hope

    Colour: Bay

Spitfire is a promising colt, which we have retained because of his pure quality Unfortunately, he is too closely related to our ponies, so we are looking for a good home for him.

He is a good mover and combines good conformation with very nice markings: 4 whites and a blaze. He will stay under 116 cm, which means he can compete in the smallest classes for ridden..

His sire is Airborne Montgomery, a first premium graded stallion at the NWPCS. He is a son of Mariska, a mare that has gained the premiums kroon, preferent and sport with the NWPCS.

His dam is the lead mare at Sumrin at this point in time and we are retaining his half sister.

Spitfire is the first foal of the 7th generation of Welsh Mountain ponies at Sumrin. he is line bred to our foundation mare, Dyrin Tina, and we believe he will be throwing consistent stock.

Montgomery's sire is Sunwillow Troy, who has produced some good stock while in the in the Netherlands.

  • Sumrin Star of Hope

    Born May 10, 2019,

Sumrin Star of Hope is unique, as she combines our two lead mares from the 1990's. Both grand dams were born in 2009 and are great grand daughters of our foundation mare Dyrin Tina. Star of Hope is the first pony to carry 4 lines of Dyrin Tina. Surprisingly enough, Star of Hope stayed chestnut.

Her name is a name I have wanted to give for some time already. When Dyrin Seren Wen foaled 4 weeks too early in 1983, she had a beautiful chestnut filly, which I planned to register as Sumrin Star of Hope. Unfortunately, she never made it and died after 10 days.

Her name comes from a mare named Grove Star of Hope, born in 1911. At age 21, she gave birth to a filly named Winestead Larina, who had a tremendous influence on the breed through her offspring Revel Light, Revel Springlight, Revel Lady, Revel Rosette, Revel Mysteria, Wentworth Silver Cream, Winestead Teresa and Caradog O'r Dwn.

On June 24, 2020, the 4th anniversary of the tragic death of her grandmother Sumrin Twilight, Sumrin Star of Hope suffered a massive injury on her near hind leg. Her tendon was torn and we feared she had to be put down. With the very professional care of Paardenkliniek Venlo, she did recover well and we showed her once. Due to her injury, she isn't 100% square, so she is staying as a brood mare. Her first two foals show she is an exceptional breeding mare. We are selling her son, as he is too related to anything else at the time. Star of Hope is available for lease or for an exceptional home.

On May 24 2022, Sumrin Saint Mary was covered by Sumrin Topelius for a 2023 foal.

On April 15, 2023, she gave birth to a chestnut (will turn grey) filly named Sumrin Sylvia. One of the most famous works of the writer Zachris Topelius is "Sylvia's Songs", so the name is a tribute to her sire.

Unfortunately, Sylvia broke her leg in the field, an operation could not save her anymore and she passed on May 1st, 2023

Erica was named after our groom Erica, who helped out my dad for many years. Sumrin T's Erica has only been shown twice. As a foal at the September show in Lierop, where she was placed second, as a yearling at the regional show in Sevenum, where she gained a first premium. The picture above was taken at the Lierop show. Erica was sold as a driving pony in the center of the Netherlands.

    Sumrin Taru , August 1, 2003.
    Born: June 2, 1988; Deceased: January 9, 2017

    Breeder/Owner: J. van Gestel

Taru has been our leading mare for many years.

In 1987, Arthur Spronken (Varpullan) and Jan Retera (Bolster) decided to visit the Revel once more in September. We urged Arthur to try to lease or purchase Revel Humming Top, but Arthur fell in love with Dyfed Geraint and agreed on a lease swap with Vardra Julius for one year. Dyfed Geraint already had left quite an impression in the Netherlands by siring Dyfed Playfair, youngstock champion of the Netherlands in 1985 and 1986.

Dyfed Geraint was not really available at public stud, but we were allowed to take three mares to him: Dyrin Tina and her two daughters, Sumrin Tessa and Sumrin Tirana. In fact, Arthur gave us a free service for Tina, as he always loved to have her in the field. Only Tina returned in foal. 18 days later, she was the first pony ever at Sumrin to be scanned with ultrasound and there we saw the beginning of a big adventure. Arthur offered us 2500 Dutch guilders for the unborn foal, but we wanted to see the result before selling.

A foal was born on June 2, 1988, whilst I was on my first tour in Finland on a training assignment. Dad and I discussed about the name and it was evident that we should somehow give it a name that refers to Finland and to Arthur and of course, start with the letter "T". Arthur's oldest daughter is named Taru Spronken, Taru is the name for "tale" or "fairytale" (ref: "The Lord of The Rings" is translated as "Taru Sormusten Herrasta", which literally translates to English as "The Tale of the Lord of The Rings").

Taru was not shown as a foal, for the obvious reason that I was living abroad for the summer. As a yearling, she won every class she was in and only letting Revel Comfrey pass for the junior championship. Always she has proven to be able to compete at the highest level.

In 1997, she won a major championship in the South of the Netherlands. The same year, her foal by Nachtegaal's Captain was first in a tough colt class at the show and as a team they won the Sundancer cup at the national show in Kootwijk. Many thanks to Mr. Piet Geelen, who showed the couple so well at the national show. In hand, the highest premium is "voorlopig keur", which she has carried since 1997.

Taru has been very fertile and has given us 18 foals, 10 of which were fillies. Two of her sons are used in stud duties in Germany and in The Netherlands. In 2010, Taru gained enough points to be awarded the "elite" premium, which is the highest premium a pony can win in the Netherlands for her progeny.

After she had her 18th foal in 2011, it was evident that it was no longer wise to put her in foal again. In early 2013, Sumrin Taru was leased out to Wieneshof in 2013 to help out at the "zorgboerderij", where she could still enjoy life and occasionally be ridden. On January 9, 2017, Taru joined her mother.

Sumrin Tatjana was the first foal of Sumrin Taru. We decided to take her to the young champion stallion Lange Voren Norman, who was really special. As a foal, Tatjana won a champion foal of all breeds at the Herveld show. As a yearling, she won her class at the regional show and was second at the national show. She then was sold to Mr. Platzer of Thrianta stud. Sumrin Tatjana has been a good show and broodmare for Mr. Platzer.

When Thrianta was stopping with A's, Mr. Droste of Voorthoeve stud picked her up.

In 1998, she was again second in a large class at the national show of the Netherlands in Kootwijk. In 1999, she was regional champion at the Tolbert show in Netherlands-North. Her son, Thrianta Silver Toy by Thrianta Silver Shadow was approved as a four year old and was best in his class.

Tatjana sadly passed away in 2015.

    Sumrin Tatum O'Neill

    born June 18, 2009

Tatum is by the stockgetter Kai Midas. Midas was awarded first premium in 2008 and has already thrown good stock, amongst which a national best three year old. Kai Midas has three crosses of the famous Twyford Gurkha and his full brother Twyford Gendarme. Kai Midas' dam is a big winner in Austria and his grandmother was many times champion in Germany. The maternal line of Midas goes back to Revel Jewel, dam of Revel Jeeves.

As we had to downsize the stud, due to health constraints, we came for the tough choice to see who is going. We did make the choice to keep her daughter Sumrin Saint Mary as well as her maternal aunt Sumrin Timea at the time, even if Tatum might be the most promising breeding mare of the three. We are very happy that she ended up with the young breeder Jelmer Couperus, to start up his new stud and be a partner with the buckskin stallion Twisthoeve (G) Rhydaman.

Tatum produced the following for Jelmer Couperus:

On May 29, 2017, Sumrin Tatum O'Neill was purchased back by the family van Gestel to breed a foal out of her. As we are scaling down, we are offering Tatum for sale to an interested breeder.

Tatum's name is misspelled intentionally. Her pedigree is at the bottom of the page, with links to pages of her ancestors on this site.

Tessa is not particularly one of the most modern mares. Her head may be not up to today's standards, but she does move! She also passes this on very well to her progeny. Here is her history:

    1984: Born April 10

1985: Swapped with Varpullan Westa at Mr.Spronken's

1986: Baught back in foal to Vardra Julius by Mr. Jan van Hest and me.

1991: Shown for the first time. She was second in a heavy class, leaving National champion 1995 Revel Humming Tune behind her!

1994: Shown for the second time. Had a first premium, second place. Didn't make it to the national, because she was too old-fashioned. Many people disagreed there with the judge. I don't mind, as long as I get to take her home. Her foal, Sumrin Tomi ended up 1st in a class of 40 colt foals.

Her 1998 foal, Sumrin Turquoise by Vechtzicht's Hero is a superb moving filly. She will be retained at stud to continue the line.

Sumrin Tessa passed away at the grand age of 29 in the fields of the van Hest family.

  • Sumrin Tiara

    Sumrin Tiara Sumrin Tiara
    Born: 1978

Sumrin Tiara was a very special pony. She was Dyrin Tina's first filly, and also the first filly we had by Vardra Julius. Her career was at least amazing. As a yearling, the first show she was entered, she won junior championship, with a yearling from our home town named Iris (by Coed Coch Brodor) placed second. Both qualified for the southern Netherlands show, where Tiara again won junior championship and both yearlings qualified for the national. At the national, roles were reversed, Iris won the class and won national junior championship.
In 1980, Sumrin Tiara came back to the showring. Again, local, regional and national shows. This time a full win, all three times she won junior championships. Although, as we had Sumrin Titiana already, my father decided to sell Tiara to Mr. van Zeeland of Hofke stud. Later some more with her offspring.
In 1981, Sumrin Tiara came back again. This time to win best three year old. This was the top year for Sumrin, as at the national, Sumrin Titiana won junior championship, Tiara won the best three year old cup (with a foal at foot, which has not been repeated many times!). Mother Dyrin Tina won national reserve championship, which was quite the achievement.

At Hofke, Tiara had quite a breeding career, from her, the three best ones were:
Hofke's Sophie by Weston Falcon, champion mare
Hofke's Socrates by Rowfant Saul, 1st premium stallion
Hofke's Desiry by Hisland Pye, "ster" mare.
All three belonged to the best stock those stallions got. Socrates was the only approved stallion by Rowfant Saul.
Hofke's Sophie actually built a dynasty on her own. She seemed to click very well with Hisland Pye, which amongst other nice ponies produced Hofke's Daisy, one of the nicests mares by Hisland Pye. Hofke's Daisy was put to Sophie's halfbrother, Nachtegaal's Captain to preduce the champion mare Nebus Serena, one of the foundation mares of Roetsenest stud.
There she produced the champion stallion Roetsenest's Santa Fe.

  • Sumrin Timea

    Sumrin TimeaSumrin Timea
    born May 27, 2011

Timea is a Hungarian name. It also is a bit of word play, as her parents were 23 and 21 when she was born. That almost provides a time machine in old breeding Since we took Taru to High Flown Japhet, we have not done such strong linebreeding to Revel Choice and Clan Pip. She is the first pony we have bred with Revel Chelsea, Revel Chip and Revel Cassino as ancestors. Revel Chip even appears three times in Timea's pedigree. Timea is also the only pony that we have bred sired by champion and elite stallion Springbourne Glide.

Sumrin Timea's greatest asset is her absolute correctness. At one point, she had not seen a farrier for 15 months. Our farrier was completely surprised how correct she was standing on her feet and wondered if she even needed to be done.

Sumrin Timea has only been shown lightly. At the regional show of Hellendoorn in 2015, she was awarded with a first premium. Her 2015 colt, Sumrin Topelius by Lowland Danny Boy has been retained and that is how we plan to continue her virtues.

Timea is sold as a riding pony.

About the show in Itterbeck you can find more on: http://welsh-pony.de

  • Sumrin Tirana

    Sumrin TiranaSumrin Tirana
    Born: 1982
(Photo 2006, by Theo ten Brinke)

Sumrin Tirana was born in 1982 in Lierop at Sumrin. She was the seventh foal Tina gave birth to, and the third filly by Vardra Julius. At the time, we knew she could be the last one Tina would get by Julius, as we had already purchased Criban Star Fiddle to mate with he full sister Sumrin Titiana.

In the winter of 1982/1983, Tirana got caught in the fence. At the time, we still used a steel wire for the electric fence. When playing with her yearling buddy, she cut her hind leg, causing a gaping wound, nearly cutting her tendon.

Tirana was only shown lightly as a yearling. Before she was entered to the show, dad asked me whether this one would do as well as her full sisters Tiara and Titiana. I said: well, she might be a bit big for the judge's taste and he head is by far not as pretty as Tiara's and Titiana's head. I remember a class where she entered as first in line, as written in the catalogue. Her class had more than 10 yearlings in, which was common for a local show in those days. The system was slightly different back then, as the judges would let them walk around and would rank them while walking before doing the individual presentation. As the yearlings were place before the individual presentation, the judges pulled up 5 yearlings ahead of her, so it seemed my prophecy was right. After Mr. Laemers and his co-judge did the personal evaluation, she went up two places. And then something strange happened: somehow they couldn't decide and they let the class walk on for 45 minutes! Where most fillies just gave in, Tirana still displayed her superior walking skills and she ended up first! Unfortunately, she lost the youngstock championship against Fuchsia Ilona (who became a foundation mare for Zonneweide stud). Tirana qualified for the regional show in Wanroy, where her half sister Sumrin Tsarina won the foal championship and her mother Dyrin Tina was section A champion. Tirana was pulled in first again. For the national, we decided to leave her home, as it was a very long ride to Ermelo, and we also had Dyrin Tina and Sumrin Tsarina with us. As yearlings would have to appear at 9:00 AM, we wanted to have more time and Tina was the one that would have more chances to win a major prize. To our big surprise, the pony that was pulled in second at the Wanroy show actually won the yearling class at Ermelo, so we did leave a good chance to win a major class at the national!

At age three, Sumrin Tirana was taken to Rowfant Seal by Mr. Retera of Bolster stud. We actually were on vacation at the time when she was in season, and Mr. Retera offered to take her there. We didn't expect much from that combination, although Rowfant Seal was already a top breeding stallion, he had been a senior stallion at Dyrin before and had not produced too many winners there, indicating he did not fit well on Dyrin mares. The resulting filly, Sumrin Toulouse was sold to Mr. Quirinus van Dongen of Abberthome stud and in 1986, Tirana was traded for Sumrin Tessa, who was in foal to Vardra Julius at the time. So Tirana was the second Sumrin pony to be standing at Varpullan stud. Mr Piet Kabel from Stuifakkers stud decided to buy her off Mr. Spronken and after producing some foals for him, she was sold to Mr. Laemers, the judge who made her first as a yearling!

Interesting enough, Sumrin Toulouse did start a dynasty of successful ponies, one of her far descendants is a successful pony named Bernard in the Czech republic for the Amerika stud of Gabriela Rotova. Another one is the premium stallion Airborne Montgomery. More about Sumrin Toulouse in the article about her.

    Junior National Champion, 1981

Sumrin Titiana was born in 1980 in Lierop at Sumrin. She was the fifth foal Tina gave birth to. It was quite a sunny day in the middle of the field, the same place where tristan was born, except for the fact that the tree had been cut already. It was as sunday, many cyclist came by the field and used their camcorders to record the moment for posterity.

She had quite a succesful showing career. At the first two shows, she won the yearling class. In the competition she lost from her paternal halfsister Varpullan Vina. At the second show, she qualified for the national, where she was first in her class. leaving halfsisters Varpullan Ester and Varpullan Gwenna and Hengelhoef's Alexia right behind her. At that show she managed to win the junior championship as well. (Continued after pedigree)

Sumrin Tiara, Sumrin Titiana & Dyrin TinaThe 1981 national show was quite a remarkable one to us. At a national show, 4 main prizes can be won. This were the results:

      • National Championship: Gwen Vale Bethan
      • National reserve Championship: Dyrin Tina
      • Best three year old: Sumrin Tiara
      • Junior Championship: Sumrin Titiana.

As you see, Tina and her first two daughters by Vardra Julius ruled the showground almost.

Sumrin Tiara was already sold, Tina had a colt at foot, Sumrin Terence Hill and Titiana was at that moment the only daughter we owned. We turned down some very good offers for her and she stayed at Sumrin. 1981 was the last year she was shown.

In 1982, we purchased Criban Star Fiddle, to get Titiana in foal to him. Titiana got a magnificent foal by him, named Sumrin Bluebell. Bluebell story can be found in her own page. With Bluebell at foot we decided to sell Titiana. At that time we retained Bluebell, Tessa, Tirana and Tina, so we had a good future perspective.

Her new owner went blind unfortunately and she was sold on. She died at the age of 7, unfortunately, but leaving three daughters:

      • Sumrin Bluebell by Criban Star Fiddle
      • Silvertop's Tina by Hisland Pye
      • Silvertop's Ilona by Hisland Pye

Sumrin Toendra was born in 1991. Toendra was the first filly we bred by Vechtzicht's Harmony and in fact also the most expensive we have ever sold.

Her new owner didn't show her at all, but she was a prolific breeding mare, most notably the mares Vrilkhoven's Leslie by Biesdeel's Planed and Heidezicht's Daisy by Gulden Hoef's Amadeus.

Sumrin Toscane was the first chestnut filly to be born at Sumrin since 1980. Almost by accident, she is linebred to the successful Full brothers Springbourne Claret and Springbourne Caraway. We also believe this is visible in her conformation. Being very proportionally built and combining a strong back and hind quarters, she goes back to the basis of Welsh breeding. As a bonus, Toscane showed very good movement in-hand.  Toscane gained a first premium at the regional show of the NWPCS. Unfortunately, we have not heard from Toscane since 2006.

In 1985, we were on vacation as Sumrin Tirana came in season. Our neighbor, Jan Retera of Bolster stud took the liberty to get her to Rowfant Seal. An odd decision, as Rowfant Seal had been serving at Dyrin stud before with limited success.

However, Sumrin Toulouse became a good breeding mare. Noteably one of her daughters was Abberthome's Tessa by Nachtegaal's Captain, who started a dynasty of her own. Her descendants were send across the mainland of Europe, notably Bernardin the Czech republic and of course Airborne Montgomery in the Netherlands.

Sumrin Toulouse was sold  to Abberthome stud as a foal.

    Owner: Peter van der Linden
    Born: 1992

Sumrin Tricia was born in 1992. Tricia was Tina's last foal. As a foal she was only shown at the progeny inspection of her father, Vechtzicht's Harmony, where she was quite an eyecatcher of a foal.

Tricia was not shown very much until 1999. In 1999, she became Reserve Champion at the regional show in Wanory, behind her paternal half sister Vechtzicht's Heulwen. At the national, Heulwen ended up national champion and Tricia won the prize for the best combination of mare and foal with her foal by Baledon Valpariso at foot.

The two most well-known offspring of her were Our Dream's Tosca by Varpullan Pepijn and Our Dream's Tessa by Baledon Valpariso. Tosca stayed at the Powerful stud for a while, where she bred Powerful's Platini, who sired Powerfuls Zenyatta. Platini now is pursuing a sports career in driving.

    Born: 1983

Sumrin Tsarina was Tina's first filly by Criban Star Fiddle. She made a jumpstart on her showing career by Winning the foal championship at the Regional show in Wanroy, 1983. Her dam, Dyrin Tina won the overall championship that day. She was sold to Mr. van Hest of Hoogeind. At the age of 3, Tsarina was sold to the Goldschmidt family, after which Sumrin Tessa was bought back to stay at Sumrin and Hoogeind. From there on, she moved to the van Rijn family of Waardhoeve stud, where she produced Waardhoeve's Tirion, who was purchased to strengthen the Tina line in 1997. Her full brother, Waardhoeve's Tryfan was accidently gelded as a three year old, but proved to be a very versatile riding pony.

Tsarina subsequently was sold to Ms. Jannie de With in Hei en Boeicop until she died, where she still bred some offspring. Tsarina won a number of first premiums at mature age.Sumrin Tsarina

Sumrin Tuesday was the first chestnut filly out of Sumrin Taru. She combines Welsh type, with a very pretty head and good movements. She is sold to Rhoon (near Rotterdam) and had a number of foals there.

    Sumrin Tulip Festival
    Born: 19 May 2000, Deceased: 22 September 2022
    Breeder/Owner: J. van Gestel

Sumrin Tulip Festival is one of the best mares we have bred. As a three year old, she won her class at a regional show. As a four year old, she has already proven to be able to throw a quality foal. Tulip's biggest assets are a very classical type with very strong movements. At the 2009 National show, Sumrin Tulip Festival was 2nd in a large class of 25 mares, only to be beaten by Vrilkhoven's Leslie (out of Sumrin Toendra). Tulip Festival has given the following foals at Sumrin:

2004: Sumrin Toscane by Mulligens Domeniek
2008: Sumrin Troye by Gulden Hoefs Vivaldi
2009: Sumrin Tatum O'Neill by Kai Midas

Tulip was used for driving in harness by the van Gerwen family in Wenum-Wiesel (my sister Luce and her late husband Perry). They have decided not to breed from her anymore.

After the unexpected passing of Perry, we decided that Tulip should come back to Sumrin to join Sumrin Saint Mary. She is now enjoying her golden years in Limburg.

On September 22, 2022, out of the blue, she fell ill and it was clear that she was in so much agony that she had to be put to sleep.

Her granddaughter Sumrin Saint Mary as well as her greatgranddaughters Sumrin Star of Hope and Sumrin Shine a Light are still with us.

    Born May 22, 2009

20 days too early, Taru gave birth to a filly by the sadly deceased Ysselvliedt's Superted, who won second place in the heavy class of youngsters in 2008. Superted was by Powys Shon, a big winner in Wales out of the fantastic breeding mare Ysselvliedts Shirley. Her name Turandot comes from an old Persian tale, documented in "The Book of One Thousand and One Days", which was later the main subject of the opera "Turandot" by Puccini.

At Age 4, Sumrin Turandot was qualified for the national and gained the "STER" premium for the NWPCS.

After her first foal Sumrin Tsjaikowski was weaned, Turandot was in fact taken away to be put to sleep.

Years later, I had word that she does still live, and to be more precise, she lives in SoutherN France now, near Nice.

Here Sumrin Turandot pictured March 17, 2012 as a three year old in Lierop.

    Born: 2009
    Breeder: J. van Gestel
Owner: Lynne & Martin Irnich, Sadiqui stud, Erftstadt, Germany/ Kerstin Petith, Horseland stud.

We decided to name this one Twilight. Twilight is one of the foundation mares at the Criban stud and she was a grey, even without the influence of Dyoll Starlight. There are in fact 159 crosses of the original Twilight in Sumrin Twilights pedigree. Other more or less famous Twilights in her pedigree are. Grove Twilight, mother to Grove Peep O'Day (20 crosses), Hawddgar Twilight, grandmother to Grey Princess (13 crosses), the foundation mare of the Coed Coch "P" line, Irfon Lady Twilight, mother to Craven Cyrus (8 crosses), Twilight of Dyffryn, mother of Mathrafal Tuppence (14 crosses). We hope she will do her famous ancestors justice. The start is good, she is a great mover, she has a very small head and a nice neck.

    Sumrin Twilight as a yearling

Update August 2010: we went to see Twilight again at her new home in Germany. She is growing up to be a fine mare it was great to see how well she is being kept by Lynne and Martin. Of course, as hers sire Kai Midas is out of Sadiqui Little Gift, she isn't a total stranger to the family.

Update June 2015: unfortunately, Sumrin Twilight has deceased, leaving her firstborn colt Horseland's Cracker as an orphan.

Update October 2015: Twilights only son, Horseland's Cracker moves to Sumrin to perpetuate her line.
